Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) has gained credibility in the past decade or so as being a “real” syndrome. (Anyone suffering with it already knew that.) However, FMS is as difficult to define.
Fibromyalgia is a disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep, memory and mood issues. Researchers believe that fibromyalgia amplifies painful sensations by affecting the way your brain processes pain signals. Women are much more likely to develop fibromyalgia than are men.
The medical community has no cure for FMS. Current treatment results are varied. Improvements are difficult to come by. Symptoms are mostly invisible to others (which adds to FMS sufferers’ frustration) and vary from person to person. Weather changes, cold or drafty environments, hormonal fluctuations (premenstrual and menopausal), poor sleep quality, stress, depression, and anxiety can all contribute to or exacerbate FMS episodes.
It makes a certain amount of sense then, that if you can decrease your level of mental/emotional stress, you might well decrease your experience of pain, dysfunction, and episodic disruptions. If nothing else, you regain some feeling of control in your life.
Reiki can help you decrease your stress level, relax, re-energize, and replenish yourself enough that FMS may actually become tolerable. Until there is a cure, there is Reiki.
